What Hidden Data Is Inside Your Videos?
Every video recorded on a phone carries more than pictures and sound. The container file stores a quiet profile of when, where and on what device it was filmed.
- GPS coordinates stored as an ISO 6709 string, accurate to a few metres. iPhones write it by default when Location Services is on for the camera.
- Device make, model and OS version, for example "Apple iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 18".
- Creation and modification timestamps that reveal when you were somewhere.
- Software and encoder tags and sometimes XMP editing history.
Do Social Platforms Strip It for You?
Major platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube remove most embedded metadata when you upload, but not all services do. Messaging apps that send the original file, cloud links, email attachments, forums, marketplaces and direct downloads can all expose the original metadata. Cleaning the file first is the only way to be certain.
How the Lossless Cleaner Works
An MP4 or MOV is a tree of "atoms". The tool walks that tree, deletes the udta and meta atoms and any root-level XMP, zeroes the creation timestamps, then rewrites the chunk offsets so the video still plays. The actual audio and video data in the mdat atom is copied unchanged, which is why there is no quality loss and no waiting for a re-encode.
When to Clean Metadata
Before selling items online, sharing footage of your home, posting from a sensitive location, sending video to people you do not know, or publishing work where the shooting location or device should stay private.
